Massachusetts Declares Immediate Travel Ban for South Coast Amid Blizzard

Governor Healey signed an executive order banning non-essential motor vehicle travel in Bristol, Plymouth, and Barnstable counties due to dangerous snow and road conditions, with the Mass Pike speed reduced to 40 mph; exemptions cover essential workers and critical services, and the ban will be lifted when MassDOT determines conditions are safe, as the department redeploys snow removal resources and statewide highway service is expected to remain limited for an extended period.

MassDOT's New Gates in Ted Williams Tunnel Ease Gridlock, but Commuters Still Face Challenges

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has installed new gates in the Ted Williams Tunnel to alleviate gridlock and improve traffic flow. The flashing red gates with arrows will occasionally block one lane of traffic to create space for emergency situations and ease congestion for airport travelers. The ongoing closure of the Sumner Tunnel has caused frustration among drivers, particularly in East Boston. MassDOT has offered alternative travel options such as free T and ferry rides, but for those who must drive, they are advised to allow extra time. The Sumner Tunnel project is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Green Line Extension Shutdown Postponed, Alarming Somerville State Reps

Somerville state representatives have expressed alarm over the six-week shutdown of the Green Line Extension, which will halt service between Lechmere and Union Square stations from July 18 to August 28. They are concerned that the alternative bus options provided by the MBTA will not be sufficient for Union Square riders, and are calling for additional accommodations such as more buses or shuttle services. The representatives also requested that buses be made free at Union Square to expedite boarding. The shutdown is necessary for MassDOT to repair the deteriorating steel on the Squires Bridge.

Healey appoints experienced safety consultant as MassDOT's first-ever safety chief.

Governor Maura Healey has appointed Patrick Lavin, a consultant who worked on a 2019 report about the MBTA’s safety procedures, as MassDOT’s chief safety officer. Lavin, who has previously served as safety chief for the transit system in Washington, D.C., and a safety director for New York City Transit, will report to T general manager Phillip Eng and Secretary of Transportation Gina Fiandaca. The new role was created to improve safety for riders and workers across all modes of transportation. Lavin's appointment comes at a time when the MBTA has been plagued by safety incidents and service cuts.
