Complaint Filed Against County Executive Mark Poloncarz

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz is facing a complaint alleging an improper grant of thousands of dollars to Buffalo's Italian Cultural Center. The complaint suggests that the grant was issued due to Poloncarz's relationship with an official at the center. The Erie County Comptroller's Office has reviewed the contracts and found that all rules were followed, but Poloncarz's opponent in the County Executive's race believes there should have been disclosure of any potential conflict of interest. The opponent is calling for further investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Poloncarz denies any physical altercation in his recent domestic incident with his ex-girlfriend.

Upstate NY counties take different stances on asylum seekers

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has announced that his county will welcome asylum seekers from New York City, who have been forced out of their own countries by authoritarian rulers or for other serious life-threatening reasons. This is in contrast to other counties in Upstate New York that have issued emergency orders or filed lawsuits to block migrants from being transported to and/or housed in their counties. Poloncarz said that the asylum seekers are legally in the country seeking asylum, have been vetted by federal authorities prior to arriving, and will be coming from New York City.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has announced that he will not declare a State of Emergency for Erie County over an influx of migrants in New York State, despite several counties across the state declaring States of Emergencies over the possibility that asylum seekers could be placed in their counties. Poloncarz claims that issuing an order is illegal under Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and also called an order “morally repugnant.”
