Ancient ctenacanth sharks reveal Mississippian seas inside Mammoth Cave
Researchers have identified two 325-million-year-old ctenacanth shark fossils in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky—Troglocladodus trimblei and Glikmanius careforum—each about 10–12 ft long. The find sheds light on Mississippian coastal ecosystems and shark evolution, and results were obtained through collaborative fieldwork with MNCPPC, the Cave Research Foundation, and the National Park Service, with the study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.
