Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the beloved 106-year-old Loyola University Chicago chaplain and March Madness icon from the 2018 run, is retiring from her official duties, marking the end of an era for the university and its fans.
Dionne Mhoon, the mother of slain Chicago police Officer Aréanah Preston, accepted her daughter's master's degree in jurisprudence from Loyola University Chicago School of Law during the university's commencement ceremony. Preston, who was pursuing the degree, was fatally shot near her home in Avalon Park. Four teenagers have been charged in connection with her killing. Loyola University President Mark Reed presented Preston's diploma to Mhoon, who received a standing ovation from the audience. Sara Block, academic director for child and family law programs at Loyola, described Preston as a "dynamic, intelligent, committed and a very driven person who wanted to make this world a better place."
