LA County withdraws controversial proposal to depopulate jails after public and law enforcement pushback.
A proposal by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to lower the population of county jails has been withdrawn due to public opposition. The proposal called for agencies to evaluate and expand programs to keep people out of jail, including the expanded use of electronic monitoring instead of jail time and transferring more convicted inmates to the state prison system. However, concerns were raised by the public and at least two of the board's five members, prompting Supervisor Hilda Solis to withdraw the proposal for now.
