Lifeguard shortage challenges beach safety nationwide.

Leaders of the unions representing lifeguards at city-run beaches and pools in New York City have warned students at the city's lifeguard school about Department of Parks and Recreation bosses. The school has been unofficially run by union brass on the Parks Department payroll for years. The new first deputy commissioner, Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, has made changes to help boost recruitment in the face of a dire shortage of lifeguards to cover the city’s nearly 100 indoor and outdoor pools, and its 14 miles of beaches, stretches of which are closed for lack of lifeguards. The changes have apparently rattled union leaders, who teach aspiring lifeguards how to work at beaches and pools.

Lifeguard Shortage Sparks Summer Safety Concerns Across the Nation

A nationwide lifeguard shortage may cause hundreds of pools and beaches to close this summer, with over half of them seeing closures or reduction in hours. The shortage grew during the pandemic when pools and beaches were closed and lifeguards found work elsewhere. The risks of the job, a seasonal schedule that only pays during warmer months, and a lifeguard's responsibility for saving someone else’s life play factors in the staffing shortage. The American Lifeguard Association recommends checking your local beach or pool website to make sure they are fully staffed with lifeguards before heading out for fun.

Summer Swim Season Suffers Setbacks in Several Regions.

Many public pools in communities across the region are facing delayed openings or closures due to a shortage of lifeguards, severe disrepair, and construction. Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk says his city had an easier time finding lifeguards once it lowered the minimum age required to start from 16 years to 15 years. The Fountain Hill Community Pool and the Catasauqua Pool have been closed for several seasons due to severe disrepair and concerns of possible sinkholes. The Fountain Hill Community Coalition said it's shooting for reopening next year. The Weona Park Pool in Pen Argyl received $500,000 for repairs, and two out of the three pools in Whitehall Township are closed "until further notice."

Lifeguard Shortage Plagues Pools and Beaches Nationwide

New York City is facing its worst lifeguard shortage on record, with fewer than 500 lifeguards ready to work, roughly a third of the number needed to fully staff beaches and pools this summer. The shortage is partly due to a bitter fight between the city and the unions that represent lifeguards, who control all lifeguard operations, down to determining who qualifies to work each summer. The shortage also stems from perennial issues like low salaries, a difficult qualifying test, and a pandemic-induced slowdown of the lifeguard pipeline.

Summer 2023 Pool Updates: Openings, Closures, and Rentals

Bismarck Parks and Recreation will only open Hillside Pool this summer due to a shortage of 40 lifeguards needed to fully staff and safely open all three outdoor pools. The organization also has to cut back on swimming lessons, with no outdoor swimming lessons available this summer. The indoor pools at the BSC Aquatic and Wellness Center will remain open through the summer.
