Examining the Risks of China's Semiconductor Imports for US

The US Department of Commerce will conduct a survey of the US semiconductor supply chain and national defense industrial base to address national security concerns related to Chinese-sourced chips. The survey aims to identify how US companies are sourcing legacy chips and reduce national security risks posed by China. A report released by the department highlighted China's substantial subsidies to its semiconductor industry, creating an unlevel playing field for foreign competitors. The survey will also help promote a level playing field for legacy chip production and address non-market actions by foreign governments.

US Commerce Department Launches Survey to Track and Boost National Security in Semiconductor Supply Chain

The U.S. Department of Commerce will launch a survey in January 2024 to assess the capabilities and challenges of the American semiconductor supply chain and national defense industrial base. The survey aims to identify how U.S. companies are sourcing legacy chips and will inform policies to bolster the semiconductor supply chain, promote fair competition, and reduce national security risks posed by China. The Bureau of Industry and Security will focus on the use and sourcing of Chinese-manufactured legacy chips in critical U.S. industries. The survey is a response to a Congressionally-mandated report that assesses the U.S. microelectronics industrial base.
