The officers, searching for the suspect and victims, shouted at Polito to exit the building without realizing he was the gunman. Polito later pulled out his weapon and was killed in a shootout with university police officers. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but Polito had been in financial trouble and was turned down for a teaching job at UNLV and other Nevada schools.
