A 17-year-old high school senior from Georgia, identified as Megan Ebenroth, has died after contracting a rare "brain-eating amoeba" known as Naegleria fowleri. Ebenroth had gone swimming in a lake with friends before experiencing symptoms that led to hospitalization and intubation. The Georgia Department of Health issued a warning about the infection, which is caused by warm freshwater lakes and destroys brain tissue, usually resulting in death. While the risk of infection is low, recreational water users are advised to be cautious. Ebenroth's cause of death was ruled as a brain infection.
