ACL Tears: Surgery Not Always Necessary
Not every person with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) requires surgery, as an unstable knee or a sense of the knee giving out are common indications for surgery. Surgeons may recommend surgery for individuals who engage in high-stress activities that strain the knee. Surgery carries risks such as infection, blood clots, graft failure, arthritis, and scarring. Irregular heart rate and cholesterol issues are not reasons to avoid surgery.
