Furlow-Smiles is scheduled to be sentenced in March 2024.

Alabama State Representative John Rogers has been indicted on federal charges of obstruction of justice and obstruction of justice by bribery in connection with a kickback scheme involving the misuse of funds from the Jefferson County Community Service Fund. Rogers is accused of attempting to bribe someone to lie to federal investigators about the scheme in exchange for public funding for their nonprofit organization. He is the third person to be indicted in the case, which also involves former State Representative Fred Plump and Rogers' assistant, Varrie Kindall. Rogers maintains his innocence and is scheduled to be arraigned on October 12.
Precision Lens, a Bloomington-based eye lens distributor, has been ordered by a federal judge to pay $487 million in civil damages for funding a kickback scheme that included lavish vacations and trips to exclusive sporting events for eye surgeons in exchange for using their products in cataract surgeries reimbursed by Medicare. The company was found guilty of violating the False Claims Act.
