Fort Benning renamed in honor of decorated Vietnam vet.

Fort Benning, a US Army training base in Georgia, has been renamed Fort Moore in honor of the late Lt. Gen. Harold “Hal” Moore and his wife Julia, who both made significant contributions to the Army. The renaming is part of a congressional commission's recommendation to remove Confederate names from military bases. Harold Moore served in the Army between 1945 and 1977, and his efforts were portrayed in the 2002 film “We Were Soldiers.” Julia Moore was a leader of Army family programs who changed how the military cares for the widows of fallen soldiers.
