Tadej Pogačar will skip the Vuelta a España to rest after his Tour de France victory, with João Almeida and Juan Ayuso announced as co-leaders for the race, which starts in Italy on August 23, as Pogačar plans to focus on other races later in the season.
Juan Ayuso finishes second behind Jonas Vingegaard in the Tirreno-Adriatico stage 6, acknowledging Vingegaard's dominance and expressing satisfaction with his own performance. Despite a mechanical setback, Ayuso managed to secure second place and now sits second overall in the general classification, leading the best young rider classification. Ayuso also claimed the points jersey and reflected on his victory in the first stage time trial.
Mattias Skjelmose of Trek-Segafredo won his first WorldTour stage race by holding on to finish third in the closing time trial at the Tour de Suisse, nine seconds down on stage winner Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates. Ayuso's winning time of 32:25 wasn't enough to take the overall title, as Skjelmose finished nine seconds ahead of him to win the race. The 22-year-old Dane looked to be out of it at the first checkpoint on the 25.7km course, falling out of virtual yellow with a second's deficit to Ayuso, but he rallied to mount a comeback on the hilly mid-section of the stage to claw back precious seconds and take a big victory.
Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates won stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, soloing to victory on the queen stage. Mattias Skjelmose of Trek-Segafredo took second place and the yellow jersey. Race leader Felix Gall of AG2R Citroën conceded four seconds in the final dash for the line and slipped to second place. Pello Bilbao of Bahrain Victorious claimed the final spot on the podium. Remco Evenepoel of Soudal-QuickStep was distanced in a split at the top of the Albulapass and conceded 26 seconds to Skjelmose.
