The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Miami Marlins 4-3 in 11 innings at loanDepot Park. The Pirates rallied to tie the score in the ninth but lost on a walk-off hit by Jon Berti off Pirates reliever Angel Perdomo. The Pirates struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2 of 17 in those situations. Andrew McCutchen reached base all five times, adding three walks to his two doubles.
The Miami Marlins have activated infielder Joey Wendle from the injured list and optioned infielder Xavier Edwards to Triple-A to make room for him on the active roster. Wendle, who was expected to be the starting shortstop this season, has struggled since being acquired by the Marlins from the Rays in 2022. He will share time at shortstop with Jon Berti, who has been filling in admirably in the infield. Edwards, a former top prospect, will head back to the minor leagues with just six big league plate appearances under his belt.
The Miami Marlins have placed pitcher Johnny Cueto on the 15-day injured list with right biceps tightness and infielder Joey Wendle on the 10-day injured list with a right intercostal strain. In corresponding moves, left-hander Braxton Garrett and infielder Garrett Hampson were recalled from the minors, while left-hander Daniel Castano had his contract selected. Right-hander Jeff Lindgren was designated for assignment. Cueto signed a one-year, $8.5MM deal with the Marlins this offseason, and Wendle was bumped up to the club’s top shortstop option with this offseason’s trade of Miguel Rojas to the Dodgers.
