US aid worker Jeffery Woodke and French journalist Olivier Dubois, who were kidnapped by militants in West Africa, have been released and arrived at an airport in Niger's capital, Niamey. Their release was secured following efforts by authorities in Niger. Mr Woodke went missing in Niger in 2016, while Mr Dubois was held hostage in neighbouring Mali for nearly two years. It is not clear exactly how or when the men were released from the captors.

No details of his release were disclosed, but a senior Biden administration official said no ransom was paid and no concession was made to captors. Woodke had been doing humanitarian aid work in Niger for more than 30 years and was believed to have been held by JNIM, a West African affiliate of al-Qaida.
