American aid worker Jeffery Woodke, who was kidnapped by militants in Niger in October 2016, has been released after more than six years in captivity. The circumstances of his release are not yet clear. Another hostage, French journalist Olivier Dubois, who went missing in Mali in April 2021, was also released. Woodke's kidnapping played a role in a fatal ambush of American soldiers in West Africa in October 2017.
