Pope Francis undergoes second surgery for intestinal issues.
Pope Francis underwent a second intestinal surgery in two years to treat a "recurrent, painful and worsening" constriction of the intestine. The 86-year-old pontiff will be hospitalized at Rome's Gemelli hospital for several days after undergoing a laparotomy and abdominal wall plastic surgery with prosthesis. Francis had part of one lung removed when he was young and also suffers from sciatica nerve pain. The Vatican recently confirmed a travel-filled August for the pope, including a four-day visit to Portugal and a similarly long trip to Mongolia.
