Firefox Celebrates 20 Years: Reflecting on Its Legacy and Future

Twenty years ago, the Firefox browser, developed by the Mozilla Foundation, emerged as a significant competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Initially named Phoenix, the browser was rebranded due to trademark issues and officially launched as Firefox 1.0 on November 9, 2004. Its popularity grew due to fewer security vulnerabilities and innovative features like tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking. Microsoft Faces Criticism Over Zero-Day Vulnerabilities and Patch Delays

Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) criticized Microsoft for not crediting them in the disclosure and patching of a zero-day vulnerability in MSHTML, reported in May and patched in July. Microsoft struggles with Windows 11 and Internet Explorer 11's fate.

Microsoft has extended the exemption for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on certain versions of Windows 10 until at least 2029, allowing organizations to continue using the legacy browser via IE mode. The company had previously planned to remove IE11 interface elements in a June 2023 update, but has now left it up to customer organizations to determine when to remove them. Meanwhile, Edge will continue to replace IE11 in most scenarios, with a small subset of exceptional cases still allowing access to the legacy browser.

The ongoing struggles of Microsoft's software products.

Microsoft has allowed customers to choose when the last bits of Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) will be removed from their devices. IE11 was disabled across some Windows 10 platforms when installing a Microsoft Edge update released on February 14. Microsoft previously planned to remove all IE11 visual references with the May non-security preview release scheduled for May 23. The legacy IE11 browser will remain available on Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU), Windows 8.1, and all versions of Windows 10 client LTSC, Windows Server SAC, Windows Server LTSC, and Windows 10 IoT LTSC.
