"OUCC Recommends Substantial Cut in CenterPoint's Proposed Rate Increase"

The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) is recommending a significant reduction to CenterPoint Energy Indiana’s proposed $118.8 million (16%) base rate increase, suggesting an increase of $33.1 million (4.5%) instead. The recommendation follows testimonies from thirteen OUCC witnesses and extensive community engagement, with specific proposals to maintain customer service charges, decrease the utility’s authorized return on equity, and implement consumer protections. CenterPoint Energy's rebuttal testimony is due on Apr. 9, 2024, with a final order from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission expected in the fall.

"Indiana Utilities Under Scrutiny for Misleading Customers and Poor Storm Response"

AES Indiana, an energy provider, is facing accusations from an advocacy group, Citizens Action Coalition (CAC), that it has been misleading customers about the impact of a proposed rate increase. AES had claimed that the increase would add $17 to the average residential bill, but CAC alleges that the actual increase would be $23.65, or 18.7% per month. CAC also criticized AES for using outdated rates in its calculations. AES Indiana defended its communication, stating that the term "Current Rates" caused confusion and that the bill calculator is designed to estimate the impact on customers' bills. CAC is encouraging customers to speak out against the rate increase at public hearings.
