Westmoreland sees rise in canine flu cases.
Cases of canine influenza virus (CIV) have been reported in Pennsylvania, with symptoms similar to Bordetella, commonly known as kennel cough. While most dogs are vaccinated against Bordetella, CIV is more difficult to diagnose and can put infected dogs at risk for other complications. The virus is not particularly dangerous on its own, but can be fatal for immuno-compromised, very young or very old dogs. Traditional antibiotics are ineffective against a virus, and antiviral drugs are expensive. Kennel owners are taking extra precautions, and pet owners are advised to ensure their dog's vaccinations are up to date and talk with their vet if they have concerns.
