Hybrid Immune Transplants Reverse Type 1 Diabetes in Mice
Stanford researchers show that in mice, a combined transplant of donor blood stem cells and mismatched pancreatic islet cells can restore insulin production and retrain the immune system, curing or preventing autoimmune Type 1 diabetes without immunosuppressants or graft-versus-host disease for at least six months, using CD117 antibody–based conditioning to create a hybrid immune system and a path toward human translation (with challenges like donor islet availability).
