Reddit now permits NSFW desktop image uploads.

Reddit has started allowing not safe for work (NSFW) images to be uploaded from desktops to communities limited to users ages 18 and up, ahead of Imgur's ban on nudity, pornography, or sexually explicit content. Although Reddit started allowing users to directly upload images to the site in 2016, many users still used Imgur for their explicit imagery needs. The move won't sit well with anti-porn groups like The National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which was already urging Reddit to update its policies.

Reddit Embraces NSFW Desktop Image Uploads Amidst Imgur's Ban

Reddit will now allow users to upload NSFW images from desktops in adult communities, bringing feature parity across platforms. This comes after Imgur announced it would ban explicit photos from May 15, which could impact many of Reddit's communities that rely on Imgur's hosting services. Reddit's move to allow native NSFW uploads through desktop may be the most logical solution going forward. However, the company is also discussing how to navigate the situation of limiting access to mature content available through its API, which would impact third-party Reddit apps.

Preserving the Best and Worst of Web History with Something Awful.

Members of the Something Awful forums have been working to download and preserve a three-terabyte collection of images and short videos from Imgur, one of the longest-running communities on the web. The project, dubbed the Great Imgur Download Caper, is part of a constant struggle to preserve digital culture and convince people that it matters. Something Awful's owner, Jeffrey of YOSPOS, plans to have the images hosted by the end of May, leaving a minimal gap if anything is deleted. The forum's managers will have to update posts to make sure they link to archived images, keeping their original context preserved.

Imgur Implements Ban on Explicit and Anonymous Content.

Image-hosting site Imgur will remove "explicit images" and "old, unused, and inactive content" not tied to a user account starting May 15. The move is aimed at aligning Imgur's "Community Rules" with its all-content Terms of Service and protecting the future of the Imgur community. Artistic nudity will be permitted, but content may be flagged. Imgur will use automated detection software and human moderators to identify explicit content. The move may result in untold amounts of link rot, and it is unclear which images will be removed.

Imgur Implements Ban on Explicit Content and Deletes Unassociated Uploads

Imgur will delete old, unused, and inactive content not tied to a user account and ban nudity, pornography, and sexually explicit content, even if uploaded by someone with an account, starting May 15th. The website will use automated detection and human moderators to find content to be deleted. "Artistic nudity" is still allowed, but may get flagged by the website's automated detection tool. Users may want to download viral images and other pieces of internet history before they disappear and find alternative services for posting explicit content.
