Controversy Surrounds Chicago's Migrant Tent Camp Construction Due to Toxic Chemicals
Construction at a Southwest Side site in Chicago, intended to house newly arrived migrants, has been halted due to an environmental report revealing the presence of toxic contaminants and heavy metals in the soil. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the city consultant's study before deciding whether the project can proceed. Despite the city's assurance that the property will be safe for temporary residential use after soil cleanup, protests from residents and concerns about hazardous substances remain. Meanwhile, around 650 migrants are currently camped out at O'Hare Airport and police stations.
