"Maine Scientist Unveils 4 New Deep-Sea Octopus Species"
Dr. Beth Orcutt, a scientist from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Science, co-led research expeditions that discovered four new species of deep-sea octopus, two of which brood their eggs in hydrothermal springs off the coast of Costa Rica. The discoveries were made during expeditions in June and December, using a remotely operated vehicle to explore the Pacific Ocean's depths. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the deep sea and highlight the need for international collaboration to protect these environments, especially in the face of potential deep-sea mining activities.
