Inventor of Football Spike Celebration, Homer Jones, Passes Away at 82.
Former New York Giants wide receiver Homer Jones, who famously invented the "spike" celebration after scoring a touchdown, has died at the age of 82 after a battle with lung cancer. Jones played seven years in the NFL and holds the record for career yards per reception at 22.3 yards. He first spiked the ball on Oct. 17, 1965, after scoring an 89-yard touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jones' move has become a staple in football and pop culture, and without his creativity, we may not have seen the evolution of touchdown celebrations that we enjoy today.
