Navigating the I-35 Expansion: Updates and Public Input

The I-35 expansion through Central Austin, known as I-35 CapEx Central, is set to be the largest since the highway's opening in 1962, with a budget of at least $4.5 billion and a potential decade-long construction period. The project includes adding managed lanes, tearing down upper decks, sinking main lanes below ground, constructing pedestrian bridges, and more. However, concerns arise regarding the impact on land, homes, businesses, urban sprawl, air pollution, and noise. The plans also involve significant changes to the highway's layout and infrastructure, with potential implications for traffic flow and safety.

Highway worker injured in Vacaville work zone crash involving stolen car.

A contract crew highway worker suffered major injuries after being hit by a carjacking suspect in an SUV that entered an active construction zone on Interstate 80 in Solano County. Caltrans is widening the highway between Vacaville and Fairfield as part of the Solano I-80 Managed Lanes project. The incident serves as a reminder of how dangerous highway workers' jobs can be, and Caltrans is urging California drivers to be more mindful of highway worker safety by minding speed, avoiding distractions, and making space for workers on the road. Caltrans will hold workers' memorials throughout the week and honor its nearly 200 employees who've lost their lives on the job since 1921 on Thursday at the state Capitol.
