Sudan's Crisis: Paramilitaries and Economic Ripples.

Sudan's paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), born out of a lightly-armed desert militia, has taken control of parts of the capital, Khartoum, despite daily air strikes by the army. The RSF's preferred tactic is close-quarters fighting, which has allowed them to take up positions in residential areas and key institutions. The conflict has left over 500 people dead, disrupted aid supplies, and turned residential areas into war zones. The RSF's leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, is playing a long game, a war of attrition designed to open up an opportunity for him to be a political leader through negotiations.

Sudan's Ceasefire Extension Fails to Halt Fighting and Bombing.

Hemedti, the leader of Sudan's paramilitary force, has said he will not negotiate until fighting ends, blaming army chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan for the violence. At least 512 people have been killed and 4,193 wounded in the fighting, according to health ministry figures, although the real death toll is likely much higher.

The Power Struggle of Sudan's Feared Generals.

General Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, better known as Hemedti, is the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group in Sudan. Hemedti's RSF is made up of Darfurian Arabs known as Janjaweed and has become more powerful than the Sudanese state. Hemedti's rise to power is an example of political entrepreneurship through violence. He has become the face of Sudan's violent, political marketplace and is the first non-establishment ruler in Sudan for 120 years. Despite grievances against Hemedti's paramilitaries, he is still recognized as a Darfurian and an outsider to the Sudanese establishment.

The Rise of Hemedti and the RSF in Sudan's Power Struggle.

General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, rose from a camel trader to become Sudan's second most powerful man and one of its richest. He played a prominent role in toppling President Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and later quashing protests by Sudanese seeking democracy. As deputy head of state, Hemedti has taken on some of Sudan's most important portfolios, including the economy and peace negotiations with rebel groups. However, his power is derived from his Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary, which has complicated efforts to restore civilian rule after the military coup in October 2021.
