The Surprising Link Between Hypochondria and Mortality
Individuals diagnosed with hypochondriasis, or health anxiety disorder, have a significantly higher risk of death compared to those without the condition, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. The study, conducted in Sweden, found that individuals with hypochondriasis faced an 84% higher risk of dying from any cause, including natural causes and suicide. The study also revealed that individuals with hypochondriasis tended to die at a younger age compared to those without the condition. The findings highlight the need for improved detection, diagnosis, and integrated care for individuals with hypochondriasis to reduce morbidity, suicidality, and mortality in this group.
