Detroit's Marcus Garvey Academy Reopens Despite Haemophilus Influenzae Outbreak
Four cases of Haemophilus influenzae disease have been confirmed at Marcus Garvey Academy in Detroit, with the cases limited to a single classroom. The school had closed temporarily last week for deep cleaning and for families to monitor their children’s symptoms. Haemophilus influenzae, a type of bacteria, can cause different kinds of infections ranging from mild to serious. The Detroit Health Department continues to investigate the illnesses at the school, which reopened on Monday. The CDC recommends staying up to date with recommended vaccines, washing hands often, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
