WHO confirms first human death from H3N8 bird flu in China.

China has reported its first human death from H3N8 bird flu, with two non-fatal infections registered last year. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that a wider spread of the virus between humans was unlikely but stressed the importance of global surveillance. The H3N8 virus is commonly detected in birds but causes few symptoms and has also infected other mammals. Health authorities across the world consider it important to monitor all avian influenza viruses, as they can easily evolve and cause a pandemic.

First human case of H3N8 bird flu reported in China.

A 56-year-old woman from Zhongshan City in southern China has tested positive for H3N8 bird flu, making it only the third time the virus has been found in humans. The woman had exposure to live poultry before falling ill, and wild birds are frequently found near her home. Experts believe this is a sporadic case, and the risk of virus transmission is low at this stage. A previous strain of the virus may have caused the 1889 pandemic.
