Aerospace suppliers and airlines worldwide are warning of increased costs and reduced plane capacity after U.S. engine maker RTX disclosed a rare manufacturing flaw that could ground hundreds of Airbus jets in the coming years. The flaw, a powder metal defect that can lead to cracks in engine components, has caused concern in an industry already grappling with staff shortages and supply chain issues. RTX will need to inspect 600 to 700 Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines over the next three years, potentially grounding an average of 350 jets per year through 2026. The repairs are expected to take up to 300 days per engine, causing a strain on airplane factories and repair shops.
