Ancient Ocean's Demise Leaves Gravity Dent in Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean gravity hole, the deepest dent in Earth's gravitational field, is located in the Laccadive Sea, southwest of India. This geoid low, discovered in 1948, was recently explained by a study using computer models to simulate Earth's mantle and tectonic plate movements over 140 million years. The study suggests the gravity hole formed after the ancient Tethys Ocean's crust sank beneath the Eurasian plate, displacing dense material and weakening gravity in the region.
