New Zealand Issues National Apology for State and Church Care Abuse
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon issued a formal apology for the extensive abuse suffered by individuals, particularly Maori and Pasifika children and people with disabilities, in state, foster, and faith-based care facilities from 1950 to 2019. A government investigation revealed that at least 200,000 out of 655,000 people experienced abuse, including rape and torture, during this period.
