The Challenges and Opportunities of Biden's Democracy Summit
The Biden administration's defense of democracy is being tested by political crises in several countries allied with the United States, including Israel, as the Summit for Democracy begins this week. While President Biden has claimed that "democracies have become stronger, not weaker" during his tenure, setbacks to democracy in countries like Mexico, India, and Brazil, as well as the proposed weakening of Israel's judiciary, cast a cloud over the gathering. The summit will include about 120 countries and will be hosted by Costa Rica, the Netherlands, South Korea, Zambia, and the United States.
