The Risks of Acid Reflux Pills: Is Surgery the Solution?
Acid reflux, a chronic condition affecting millions of adults, is often treated with over-the-counter proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPIs). However, concerns over the long-term health risks of PPIs, such as dementia and reduced nutrient absorption, have led to a growing interest in surgical options. Traditional surgeries like fundoplication and the newer Linx operation have shown mixed results, with potential side effects. A new approach using a device called RefluxStop, which inserts a ceramic ball acting as a one-way valve, has shown promise for some patients. However, more research is needed to determine its effectiveness compared to other treatments.
