House Republicans target gas stove bans and energy regulations.

House Republicans are pushing back against the Biden administration's proposed energy efficiency standards for gas stoves with two bills aimed at blocking the Department of Energy's policy change and preventing federal dollars from going towards regulatory efforts to ban gas stoves. The bills are expected to pass the GOP-dominated House but are unlikely to be taken up in the Democratically-held Senate. Republicans argue that banning gas stoves would be costly for struggling families and small independent restaurants. The proposed DOE regulation would impose tough new energy efficiency standards for gas stoves, potentially rendering half of the gas stoves on the market today non-compliant.

The Debate Over Gas Stove Bans: A Look at New York's Bold Move.

Most Senate Democrats voted against an amendment pitched by Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) that would have restricted gas stove bans during negotiations over the bipartisan infrastructure bill in 2021. The amendment would have limited grant funds from the bill going to new building codes that restricted or prohibited the use of natural gas. On Wednesday, New York became the first state to ban natural gas after Gov. Hochul struck a budget deal with Democratic supermajorities in the state legislature to prevent all new buildings under seven stories from having gas hookups by 2026.
