"Republican Candidates Brace for Tougher Rules in Second Debate"

The second GOP primary debate, set for September 27, may see a smaller stage as candidates scramble to meet the Republican National Committee's polling and fundraising thresholds. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson are at risk of missing the debate, while six other candidates appear to have already met the requirements. Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner, has met the thresholds but has refused to sign the pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee and has suggested he may not attend future debates. The RNC raised the thresholds for the second debate, making it more challenging for candidates to qualify.

RNC Raises Bar for Republican Candidates in Second Debate

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has raised the polling and fundraising thresholds for presidential candidates to qualify for the second debate of the 2024 cycle. To participate in the debate scheduled for September 27, candidates will need at least 3% in two national polls or 3% in one national poll and two polls from four early-voting states. They must also have at least 50,000 unique donors, with 200 of those coming from 20 states or territories. These requirements are higher than those for the first debate. So far, seven candidates have qualified for the first debate, including former President Donald Trump. Trump has met the qualifications but may skip the debate to hold his own campaign event. The RNC requires candidates to pledge support for the eventual GOP nominee and not participate in unsanctioned debates.
