French Ambassador Held Hostage at Niger Embassy, Confirms Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the French ambassador to Niger and other diplomats are being held hostage at the French embassy in Niamey. The ambassador, Sylvain Itte, has been prevented from leaving the embassy and receiving food. The military junta, which seized control of Niger in July, ordered Itte to leave the country, but he has remained in place with the support of French authorities who do not recognize the junta's authority. Macron emphasized his cooperation with ousted Niger president Mohamed Bazoum and stated that Itte's return will be his decision. French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna confirmed that Itte is still working and will stay as long as desired.
