Smithfield to Build $1.3B Sioux Falls Plant, Spark Downtown Redevelopment
Smithfield Foods plans to replace its 117-year-old Sioux Falls facility with a new, state-of-the-art plant on Foundation Park, a roughly $1.3 billion investment over three years that will add more than 1.4 million square feet of production space and aim to start operations in late 2028. The project is paired with a $50 million gift from philanthropist Denny Sanford to relocate the existing site and redevelop about 120 acres adjacent to downtown as a transformative district called The Sanford District, signaling the largest business investment in South Dakota history and a major downtown revitalization effort.
