A former FBI agent who had worked for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska has been sentenced to four years in prison for leaking sensitive information to Deripaska's lawyer. The agent, who had previously been involved in investigating Russian organized crime, was found guilty of corruption and espionage.
Former FBI agent Charles McGonigal, the former head of counterintelligence for the FBI's New York field office, is expected to plead guilty in a Russian oligarch-related case. He was charged with violating U.S. sanctions by attempting to remove Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska from the sanctions list and investigating a rival Russian oligarch in exchange for concealed payments from Deripaska. McGonigal is also facing charges in a separate case in Washington, D.C., for allegedly concealing $225,000 he received from a former Albanian intelligence employee.
Former FBI agent Jared L. Wise has been charged with illegally entering the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot and encouraging a mob of Trump loyalists to kill police officers. He faces four misdemeanor counts, including disrupting the orderly conduct of government and trespassing. Wise worked on counterterrorism matters at the FBI in the New York field office from 2004 to 2017 before leaving the bureau. He later joined the conservative group Project Veritas. The Justice Department’s investigation of the Capitol attack has resulted in more than 1,000 arrests, with the possibility of many more to come.
The FBI has arrested former FBI supervisor Jared L. Wise in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Wise was charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly conduct, and unlawfully parading in a Capitol building. Wise allegedly called for killing officers protecting the Capitol and called them Nazis and Gestapo. He was caught on security video entering the Capitol through the Senate wing door and later exited out a window. Wise worked as a special agent and a supervisory special agent at the FBI from 2004 until 2017.
