"The Role of the New Marine Infantry Battalion in the Littoral Regiment"

The Marine Corps is reconfiguring its infantry battalion and integrating it into the new Marine littoral regiment, while also adapting to new technologies, adversaries, and operational challenges. The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory is conducting various experiments to inform the development of these formations, with a focus on closing the feedback loop between ground-level units and headquarters. The 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment has been the subject of stand-in forces experiments, and the Corps has settled on an 880-person infantry battalion size. Ongoing experimentation and deployment of the 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment in Hawaii have shown promising results, including the use of commercial radar technology to enhance situational awareness. The integration of the infantry battalion into the littoral combat team element of the regiment is a key mission, and understanding their operations within this context is crucial for building the future infantry battalion.

Marine Corps Revamps Reconnaissance Forces and Prepares for Future with Force Design Updates.

The US Marine Corps is testing its Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle (ARV) and BAE Systems’ amphibious combat vehicle to replace the 1980s Light Armored Vehicles. The ARV is too heavy for Pacific environs, but the Corps believes it will be critical in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The Marine Corps is also experimenting with new mobile reconnaissance battalions (MRBs) that include maritime reconnaissance (waterborne) companies, light mobile companies and light armored companies. The Corps is testing small boats and unmanned vehicles to spread out in all directions and help sense the area and pass targeting data to other Marine Corps or joint force units.

The service has received broad bipartisan support from Capitol Hill, and the Marines are seeing tangible results from their modernization efforts.

Gen. Eric Smith to Lead Marines as Next Commandant

Gen. Eric Smith has been nominated to be the next commandant of the Marine Corps, succeeding Gen. David Berger who will retire this summer. Smith, currently the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, is expected to continue the Force Design 2030 modernization efforts launched by Berger. However, the effort has faced criticism from retired Marine Corps officers and Sen. Dan Sullivan has called for a hearing on Force Design to discuss some of those criticisms and concerns. Smith's confirmation by the Senate is unclear due to a procedural hold by Sen. Tommy Tuberville over the Pentagon’s abortion travel and leave policy.

Gen. Eric Smith Nominated as Marine Corps' Top Officer by Biden

President Joe Biden has nominated Gen. Eric Smith, the Marine Corps' current assistant commandant, to lead the service after the retirement of Gen. David Berger. If confirmed, Smith will oversee the transformation of the Corps into an older, more mature island-hopping force aimed at countering China in the Pacific. The nomination comes amid a larger shake-up in military leadership, with several other senior officials set to retire. Smith's nomination will need to be considered by the Senate, where it will likely be held up by Sen. Tommy Tuberville's objection to the Pentagon's decision to cover travel and leave for service members seeking abortions and other reproductive health care.
