Sweet Feed Linked to Higher Ulcer Risk in Horses - Study Finds
A horse's diet influences both the development and healing of ulcers. Sweet feeds and other high-grain concentrates can cause stomach acid production to spike in order to break down the sugar in these textured grains. Experts suggest feeding forage before the grain to buffer the stomach acid, dividing sweet feed into multiple smaller meals, or looking at other feed options with higher fat. Horses should ingest 1.5 percent of their body weight in forage daily – preferably continually.
