Understanding Picky Eating: The Psychology and Potential Issues
Food aversions, or a strong dislike for certain foods, can persist throughout a person's life, contrary to the belief that picky eating habits are outgrown. These aversions can be triggered by survival mechanisms, developmental factors, pregnancy, or sensory processing differences. While food aversions may not necessarily be problematic, they can impact a person's health if they prevent them from meeting their nutritional needs. Extreme aversions may be linked to a psychological component or a condition called avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), which requires treatment. Working with a dietitian and therapist can help address nutritional gaps and mental health concerns associated with food aversions.
