Recent research on mice indicates that an imbalance between high folic acid intake and low vitamin B12 levels may negatively affect fetal brain development, potentially impacting the cerebral cortex and synaptic connections. While folic acid fortification in food has historically reduced neural tube defects, there is growing concern about its possible connection to increased rates of neurodevelopmental disorders. The study, which used various diets in mice to observe the effects on offspring's brain development, found that high levels of synthetic folic acid or a deficiency in vitamin B12 led to changes in neural development, while natural folate (folinic acid) had minimal impact.
