New Brute-Force Attack Threatens Android Phone Security

Chinese researchers have discovered a brute-force attack called BrutePrint that can bypass the fingerprint lock on Android smartphones by using two zero-day vulnerabilities. The attack was tested on ten popular smartphone models and was able to perform an unlimited number of fingerprint login attempts on Android and HarmonyOS phones. However, iOS devices fared much better, allowing just ten additional attempts on the iPhone SE and iPhone 7, bringing the total to 15, which isn't enough for a brute-force attack. The technique could find use with law enforcement and state-sponsored actors.

The Rise of Fingerprint-Activated Smart Guns in the US

Biofire, a Colorado-based gun-making firm, has developed a smart gun that uses a fingerprint unlocking system to prevent unauthorized use. The gun is equipped with technology that requires the owner to register their fingerprint on the gun, allowing only the authorized user to unlock it. The smart gun can reduce accidental shootings, gun theft, and the use of firearms by criminals. The Biofire smart gun is expected to hit the market in 2024 and can be pre-ordered for $1,499 with a refundable $149 deposit.
