China Expands Fever Clinics to Tackle Mysterious Respiratory Illness Surge
China's health ministry has called for an increase in the number of fever clinics as the country experiences a surge in respiratory illnesses during its first full winter since easing COVID-19 restrictions. The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested more information from China after clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children were reported. The spike in respiratory illnesses is attributed to the simultaneous circulation of various pathogens, particularly influenza. The State Council has warned of the risk of a COVID-19 rebound and urged strengthened reporting on infectious diseases. Hospitals in northern areas are reporting high cases among children and long waiting times.
