Biden's Diverse Judicial Nominations Make History

President Joe Biden has announced five nominees to federal judgeships, including the first Muslim-American on any circuit court, as part of his push to nominate diverse judges with varied professional backgrounds. The nominees include the first openly LGBTQ judge for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the first Muslim-American circuit court judge for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, the first Black woman and woman of color for the U.S. District Court judge in the Northern District of Indiana, and a former assistant federal public defender for the District of Oregon. Biden has appointed 154 life-tenured judicial nominees, with two-thirds being women and people of color, but may struggle to match the number of judges appointed by his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.
