Fayneese S. Miller, the president of Hamline University, has announced her retirement in June 2024 after facing criticism for the treatment of an adjunct professor who showed images of the Prophet Muhammad in an art history class, igniting a debate about academic freedom and Islamophobia. The university's full-time faculty members overwhelmingly voted in January to support a statement that said they "no longer have faith in President Miller's ability to lead the university forward." The controversy caused reputational damage to the university, and the lecturer filed a lawsuit.
