The initiative aims to increase the number of women getting their annual mammograms, as Utah ranks low in screening rates. Women who receive their mammograms at Intermountain Health will also have access to additional resources, including a risk assessment questionnaire to determine their risk of developing breast cancer. Those at high risk may benefit from a FAST MRI breast scan.

Advancements in Breast Cancer Screenings Promote Early Detection

Advances in technology, such as the FAST MRI screening, are leading to early detection of breast cancer. A woman who participated in a training video at Intermountain Health's Breast Care Center in Murray later discovered her own breast abnormality using the same machine, which resulted in successful treatment without the need for a mastectomy or chemotherapy. The FAST MRI, which takes only 10 minutes and costs less than a traditional MRI, is expanding to other hospitals. While breast MRI scans are beneficial, they do not replace the need for annual mammograms, which can still detect some cancers better.
