Florida's Monarch High School Fined and Sanctioned for Allowing Transgender Student in Girls Sports

Monarch High School in Broward County, Florida, has been fined $16,500 and placed on probation for allowing a transgender athlete to play on its girls volleyball team, in violation of Florida law and athletics policies. The school's principal and three other employees were reassigned, and the services of a temporary athletic coach were paused. The Florida High School Athletic Association ordered the school to pay the fine, attend compliance seminars, and declared the student-athlete ineligible to represent any member school for one year. The school may appeal the decision. The investigation and staff shakeup led to student walkouts and concerns from LGBTQ advocacy organizations. A federal lawsuit filed by the student's family against the state is ongoing.

Kansas enacts controversial transgender sports and bathroom laws.

Kansas lawmakers have passed a bill banning transgender athletes in women's sports, overriding Governor Laura Kelly's veto. The Fairness in Women's Sports Act passed in the Kansas Senate and House, with supporters arguing it is about fairness in girls' youth athletics. However, opponents argue that the bill is discriminatory and unnecessary, as there are only 11 transgender students registered with the state high school activities association, and the association has received zero complaints about them. The new law will go into effect this summer.
