Murree Brewery Reopens Global Beer Trade After Half-Century Ban
Pakistan’s Murree Brewery, the country’s oldest brewer in Rawalpindi, has resumed exporting beer after a nearly five-decade ban, sending its first shipments to the UK, Portugal and Japan and planning expansion to the US and Canada. The move followed a 2022 export-policy change allowing alcohol exports to non-OIC countries, with the government hoping for revenue gains. Domestically, alcohol remains restricted to non-Muslims and certain foreigners, keeping the market small despite over 1 million cans produced monthly; the family-owned Parsi-founded business reported over $100 million in revenue in 2025 and remains cautious about expansion to avoid political backlash.
